In Europe, obligations to prevent waste from landfill have ignited development in the industry. In order to elude financial penalties at landfill sites and at the end of target years, countries have been forced to create systems of waste divergence.

But with the world on rebound from economic ruin, the place of the waste sector remains a daunting question amid growing concerns of the depletion of funds. In the wake of a severe financial deficit countries are forced to critically analyse their overall strategies as they proceed in to 2011.
